My Travel Bucket List

Traveling is a never-ending hobby. With God being a majestic artist, earth has many wonderful places to explore. As a traveler, it is always been my dream to wander to as many destinations as I can. Taking into consideration my time, my money and other aspects of my life, I know I would be reaching the following places soon:

1. PUERTO PRINCESA UNDERGROUND RIVER, PALAWAN, PHILIPPINES

The Puerto Princesa Underground River is reputed to be the longest navigable underground river in the World. It is one of the few such rivers which the public can easily experience and appreciate. It is the officially one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. The watershed area of the river within the park is covered by primary forest which is home to many endemic species of animals and plants. It encompasses an unusual variety of ecosystems, making it high scientific and conservation interest. (Confirmed travel date is December 2012)

2. EL NIDO, PALAWAN, PHILIPPINES

El Nido really is a magical place. From its ageless towering marble cliffs to its white sandy beaches with crystal clear water, many refer to it as paradise. There are over 50 beaches to discover, so many in fact that sometimes you feel as if you are on your own secluded private beach. You will also find enchanting lagoons with tranquil turquoise-green water, caves that can take you to hidden beaches, and a very diverse variety of wildlife. (Confirmed travel date is December 2012)

3. BATANES, PHILIPPINES

The Batanes island group is the smallest province in the Philippines in terms of population and land area. An area that for generations is almost isolated from the rest of the Philippines. Batanes consist of 10 tiny islands and islets namely: Batan, Sabtang, Itbayat, Mavudis, Siayan, Diogo, North Island and Y'ami. Only the first three islands are inhabited. The wind swept islands of Batanes are beautiful and enchanting and they are like no other in the Philippines. Since Batanes is separated from the country by miles of rough waters, the Ivatans (the name of the people of Batanes) have developed a different culture. Ivatans are honest, gentle and polite but brave and robust. They are proud of their their heritage and their land.

4. GREAT WALL OF CHINA, CHINA

The Great Wall of China, one of the greatest wonders of the world, was listed as a World Heritage by UNESCO in 1987. Just like a gigantic dragon, the Great Wall winds up and down across deserts, grasslands, mountains and plateaus, stretching approximately 8,851.8 kilometers (5,500 miles) from east to west of China. With a history of more than 2000 years, some of the sections are now in ruins or have disappeared. However, it is still one of the most appealing attractions all around the world owing to its architectural grandeur and historical significance.

5. PLAIN OF JARS, LAOS

More than 90 sites are known within the province of Xieng Khouang. Each site ranges from 1 up to 400 stone jars. The jars vary in height and diameter between 1 and 3 metres and are all without exception hewn out of rock. The stone jars are undecorated with the exception of a single jar at Site 1. This jar has a human bas-relief carved on the exterior. Parallels between this ‘frogman’ at Site 1 and the rock painting at Huashan in Guangxi, China have been drawn. The paintings, which depict large full-frontal humans with arms raised and knees bent, are dated to 500 BC - 200 AD .

6. BUNGEE JUMP AT MACAU TOWER, MACAU

The World's Highest Bungy Jump at Macau Tower will take its guests on a free fall at a speed of up to 200km/h for the ultimate extreme journey! Plunging from a platform 233m high, challengers will experience a 4-5 second freefall before stretching the 50 meter bungy cord nearly four times its unloaded length and rebounding at approximately 30 meters above the ground. Using a guide cable system, bungy jumpers will be able to safely experience a few rebounds before slowly landing onto a specially designed airbag. (Confirmed travel date is November 2012, although no budget yet for the jump)

7. LANTERN FESTIVAL, THAILAND

It’s Loy Krathong, Thailand’s traditional moon festival, which takes place on the eve of the full moon in the 12th month of the traditional Thai calendar. This year, that day is Nov. 20, the day before the actual full moon.

8. JERUSALEM

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, known as the Church of the Resurrection(Anastasis) to Eastern Orthodox Christians, is a church in the Old City ofJerusalem that is the holiest Christian site in the world. It stands on a site that is believed to encompass both Golgotha, or Calvary, where Jesus was crucified, and the tomb (sepulchre) where he was buried. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre has been an important pilgrimage destination since the 4th century.

9. KINGDOM OF BHUTAN

The Kingdom of Bhutan is a Southeast Asian nation nestled at the east of the Himalayas and bordered by India, Tibet, Nepal and Bangladesh. It is not for the faint-hearted.
Daily life in Bhutan and local culture are what Westerners might call “out of the ordinary.” Cigarettes are banned. Any meal is not complete without red rice. Families serve chili as a main dish. Many houses are painted with giant phalluses as protection. And monks transcribe age-old Buddhist handwritten texts into digital format in front of a computer. The quaint charm of Bhutan comes with a hefty price though: $200 a day per tourist. At this rate, Bhutan is undoubtedly one of the most expensive places to get around in.

10. BURJ KHALIFA, DUBAI

Not only is Burj Khalifa the world’s tallest building, it has also broken two other impressive records: tallest structure, previously held by the KVLY-TV mast in Blanchard, North Dakota, and tallest free-standing structure, previously held by Toronto’s CN Tower. The Chicago-based Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) has established 3 criteria to determine what makes a tall building tall. Burj Khalifa wins by far in all three categories.

11. TAJ MAHAL, INDIA

One knows that ‘The Taj’ is one amongst the World’s Wonders. One knows that it is one amongst the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. One knows The Taj as a legend of eternal love of an Emperor for his favourite Queen.

12. DISNEYLAND

Here are a lot more magical memories awaiting families in Hong Kong Disneyland, where you will embark on a magical journey through four themed lands: Main Street USA, Fantasyland, Adventureland and Tomorrowland. Must-see attractions include Flights of Fantasy Parade, which will take you up, up and away on a sky-high celebration with your favourite Disney characters singing and dancing along Main Street USA; Mickey’s PhilharMagic in which Donald Duck relives the most memorable moments of Disney’s animated films in 3D; The Golden Mickeys, a Broadway-style musical show featuring Mickey and his friends; and also Fantasy Gardens where Mickey, Minnie and Goofy make surprise appearances to meet and greet with guests – so don’t forget your camera and autograph book.  (Confirmed travel date is November 2012)

13. PETRA, JORDAN

Petra is the treasure of ancient world, hidden behind an almost impenetrable barrier of rugged mountains, boasting incomparable scenes that make it the most majestic and imposing ancient site still-standing nowadays.. It has been said "perhaps there is nothing in the world that resembles it", actually, for sure, there is nothing in the world that resembles it. The rock-carved rose-red city of Petra is full of mysterious charm, it was "designed to strike wonder into all who entered it".

14. ANGKOR WAT, CAMBODIA

Angkor Wat, built during the early years of the 12th century by Suryavaram II, honors the Hindu god Vishnu and is a symbolic representation of Hindu cosmology. Consisting of an enormous temple symbolizing the mythic Mt. Meru, its five inter-nested rectangular walls and moats represent chains of mountains and the cosmic ocean. The short dimensions of the vast compound are precisely aligned along a north-south axis, while the east-west axis has been deliberately diverted 0.75 degrees south of east and north of west, seemingly in order to give observers a three day anticipation of the spring equinox.

15. BALI, INDONESIA

Bali is an Indonesian island, one of the 33 provinces of the country. Its neighboring islands are Java and Lombok, east and west from Bali respectively. Tourism is the main source of financial income, so you can just imagine what this place has to offer. Bali is pointed out as one of the best tourist destinations by multiple travel magazines. It is not easy to describe the ambience of Bali. People are so amiable that they simply radiate their charm. At the same time you feel serenity and relaxation, mystery and excitement. Magical forces posses you while you are there, making you good-spirited and vigorous.

FIVE PLACES I WISH TO VISIT BEFORE I DIE:

1. PYRAMIDS, EGYPT

Located just outside of the outskirts of Cairo on the esplanade known as the Giza Plateau, the Great Pyramids of Giza is the must-see Ancient Egyptian landmark. Known as Khufu's Pyramid, it is the greatest pyramid of the complex: a truly overwhelming sight. Being one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, it is the only one still standing to this day! When gazing at this colossal structure, there’s no way to escape the feeling of being dwarfed
(Cited from: http://en.egypt.travel/attraction/index/giza-plateau)

2. MALDIVES

Maldives has deep blue seas, turquoise reefs, white sandy beaches and palm trees. It is also a place full of character, where its people have long spent their days languishing in the very essence of idyll living. While it is the perfect place to sit on a beach and watch a sunset with a cocktail balanced on your hand, it is also a geographical marvel, knowing that there are thousands of fish swimming around the vivid corals just a few feet away from where you sit.

3. ATHENS, GREECE

Experience endless miles of aquamarine coastline, sun-bleached ancient ruins, strong feta and stronger ouzo. The Greek landscape thrills, and Greek people are passionate about politics, coffee, art and gossiping.
(Cited from: http://www.lonelyplanet.com/greece#ixzz24iFZ5xJw)

4. CARNIVAL IN BRAZIL

This party has its origins in ancient Greece and Rome celebrations. Later, it was incorporated into the Catholic liturgical calendar and allowed until the Ash Wednesday. By the Catholic Calendar, Carnival is always celebrated seven Sundays before the Sunday of Easter. As this varies from March 22nd to April 25th, the Carnival dates also move.

5. AURORA BOREALIS IN ALASKA

Every traveler's life list should include viewing the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, one of nature's most spectacular phenomena. From late November to March within the Northern Lights zone--latitudes 65 to 72 degrees--solar particles collide with atmospheric gases to create colorful curtains (near the South Pole, Aurora Australis are the Southern Lights). Ideal viewing conditions are crisp, cold, clear, and cloudless skies with little light. You can see this most impressive light show--lasting from a few minutes to several days--in the following regions close to the Arctic.

Dream Country, Singapore

Singapore was my first international destination. For a first- time foreign travel, expect paranoia. If I may enumerate the things which have bothered me: The immigration, the budget, how to communicate, commuting, and many more.

We booked our flight 5 months ahead of travel period. So we got time to save and to get our passports.

For Philippine passport application, you may visit : www.dfa.gov.ph.

Below is our itinerary which I slightly altered (since we knew someone living in SG, he invited us to sleep in their house. Thus saving our few dollars from paying for accommodation) to take into consideration my suggested hostel to stay in. (Reviews for The Hive may be viewed at www.tripadvisor.com)

TIPS WHEN IN SINGAPORE

1. Do not convert. It will only kill you little by little.
2. Upon arrival, get a map from the airport and make sure to use them.
3. Do not be afraid to ride a bus. You will not get lost. Every bus station has a directory (so you will know which bus to take)
4. Prepare exact amount for bus fares. Upon entering, just drop the exact amount to the box near the driver.
5. Locals speak in English. Do not worry about language barrier.
6. If you have dollars, have them exchange in SG. Otherwise, just go to Czarina or local banks (BDO or BPI).
7. It is always better to eat at cheap local restaurants so you may taste a true Singaporean cuisine . Don't worry, they are safe.
8. Bugis is a shopping haven. Cheapest I love SG T-shirts cost 200 to 300 pesos  (converted). Cheapest bags cost 350-300 pesos. Key chains cost 300 for 20 pieces.
9. SG is a fine city (double meaning here). Chewing gums, spitting, littering, etc are subject to fine.
10. Always, as in always, bring your passport, especially when you will roam until midnight.

The Enchanting Mount Pinatubo

Tips in visiting the crater of Mount Pinatubo.

1. Exercise before hiking.

Since we were 12 in a group, we decided to just rent a van, for it will cost much cheaper than riding a public bus. Van rental: PhP 2,500 excluding toll fee.

We just booked the trip from Ensogo. Only to found out, that the promo is a ripped off. As per conversation with our tourist guide, 4x4 ride costs only 2,500, good for 5 persons. Tourist guide costs only 500. A total of 3,000 to be divided by five. That is, 600 per pax plus 300 conservation fee. We paid the voucher for 988 pesos. Shocks!

Budget for a DIY Mt. Pinatubo trek:

Van Rental with toll and driver tip - 3,500 / 5                    700
Environmetal fee -                         300/head                   300
4x4 ride plus tour guide                  3000                         600
Food                                                                            400
TOTAL PINATUBO TREK BUDGET                                      2,000 PESOS

Our first stop is Isdaan floating restaurant in Gerona, Tarlac:

Hongkong's Giant Buddha imitation

(The famous taskyapo wall, where you can vent out all your anger)

The trek:

Right after the almost three hours trek (all in all), all I could say was "GRABE!"

How to Become a Budget Traveler

Not all those who wander are lost. - J. R. R. Tolkien

There is a difference between a traveler and a tourist. Traveler is someone who wants to immerse with a new found place using all his senses. That is, to see, to hear, to smell, to taste, and to feel everything in such place. On the other hand, a person becomes a tourist when his main purpose to wander is to  break monotony in his life, or just to have a bonding moment, either with his friends or his family.

Being a tourist is a lot easier than to become a traveler. So as a self-proclaimed traveler, I just want to share tips, which I, myself, use and practice when I am out there, wandering around.

DISCLAIMER:

The following are just blogger's own practices and guidelines that she uses when traveling. Some of them may be applicable to some, and maybe, some of them will be put into contradiction. But one thing is for certainty. All of them have been personally experienced by the blogger, and that in her judgement, the following are the most sane things to do.

                                                 (Isla Reta, Talicud Island)

A. No road is long with good company.

Only ONE good company. In traveling, I do not agree in the saying "The More The Merrier". The more you are in a group, the more time can be wasted in decision-making(where to go, or where not to go). Chances are, majority of the group will not make their research on the targeted destination. They will just become like an imbecile congressman who will just vote without knowing anything when two opposing suggestions arise. And sometimes, not all who suggest knows what he is suggesting. Like for example, while on a boat, island-hopping, your group find an island not too appealing. But you, as a traveler who have done all the research,  know that the beauty lies underwater. But since, at first sight, it looks so ordinary, someone  too brave suggested to skip the island, majority just seconded the suggestion. Experience missed.

When traveling, ideally, I want to go by two's. Find a travel buddy who is:

1. Brave - so he will not be afraid to try things.
2. Not a kill joy. (I do not need to explain further)
3. A risk taker. - not afraid to lose anything and he is willing to take chances.
4. Food lover. - To travel is to taste.
5. Who can be with you through thick and thin. - you don't want to be with
someone who will leave you in times of need.
6. A good swimmer.- Majority of wonderful places lie underwater.
7. Physically fit. - Traveling needs lot of vigor. Plus, time is the essence. You
don't want to waste time in waiting for your buddy to
                         recharge every five minutes.
8. Financially stable. - If you are that rich, you may ignore this. But since, you
are a budget traveler, you do not want to pay for all the
expenses every time you will go out and travel.
9. With sense of humor - Having a good laugh on a beautiful place, that is
                         heavenly.
10. Compatibility - the travel must be a wonderful experience for both of you. Make sure that the things you enjoy are also the things he enjoys.

(My official travel buddy ^_^ )

B. Have a travel fund.

As per economists, there is no free lunch. Being a BUDGET traveler also needs money. It's just that budget means to efficiently use all your resources. There are two things to learn here:

1. Save and be funded.

Google is you friend. Read other traveler's blog on how they fund their travels. And even better, know their secrets on how they get a free plane fares/accommodations, etc. Invest. Keep your day jobs and perform well to earn well. Coffee and doughnuts just add to your weight. Divisioria offers more fashionable clothes and shoes to wear than those expensive pieces in the malls. Avoid malls during sale. Know your priorities. Live with them. You only need a camera, memory cards, and a laptop to be a traveler. Maybe a smart phone for e-maps and external hard drives for back up may be necessary. Do not invest in electronic gadgets. All others stuffs will become like typewriters and floppy disks.

2. Use your resources efficiently.

Budgeting is important. Research. Read forums to know where is the cheapest restaurant, inns, places, techniques, routes (of course, read also the their comments, their own experiences and choose the best which can suit your preference). In choosing a place to eat, I'd rather go for a cheap, local restaurant. In choosing a place to stay overnight, cheap, clean and safe inn/hostel will do. Remember, you are there to travel, not to enjoy the ambiance of an expensive hotel. Just be sure the bed is cozy enough to have a good sleep.  I am a fan of promo fares. They are safe. Although you will wait too long for the travel period, but hey, who cares? At least you have enough time to save. What I do, I save and wait for promo fares (Cebu Pacific, airphil, Air Asia, Zest Air) and buy as many plane fares as I can afford. Then save again so I may be ready for the travel.

C. Be safe, feel safe.

We know that when we travel, it is ourselves we are giving pleasure to. But don't be too selfish. Traveling requires risks. So while we're out, why don't we give our family and loved ones a peace of mind. Be insured. There are  many insurance policies to choose from. I suggest those which have investment side. Try to inquire from RESPECTED insurance companies. I personally prefer Manulife since they have been there for a century and have already endured many economic downfall.

Most importantly, be spiritually ensured. Pray and maintain a good relationship with God. Through this, you will never feel any danger when wandering and you will feel His presence all through out your trip.

D. Time management is the key.

Every war needs a strategy. And like in a war, you will not know if the strategy works not until you get in there. That is the challenge and wonder of traveling. You need a well-researched itinerary so, at least, you have something to hold on, like where and how to start your travel. If you have day jobs, save your leaves, and use them wisely.

E. When traveling, use you five senses.

God has given us those five senses to use. Do not be afraid to try, to wander, and most especially, to get lost. Besides, in traveling, you will never ever get lost. Maybe, you will be gone to places you have never planned to go. But then, only when you open your five senses, you will learn that, such same place is worth traveling to. And the most important tip I can give is to allow yourself to get lost. For being lost is still the best technique to TRAVEL.

Traveling Back in Time, Intramuros-Manila Ocean Park

Intramuros is the oldest district and historic core of Manila, the capital of the Philippines. Nicknamed the Walled City, the fortified Intramuros was the seat of government during the Spanish Colonial Period. Its name in Latin, intramuros, literally means "within the walls"

HISTORY

The planning of the city of Manila was commenced by Santiago de Vera, the sixth governor-general on the islands. The plans for Intramuros were approved by King Philip II of Spain's Royal Ordinance issued in San Lorenzo, Spain.
Gomez Perez Dasmarinas, the next governor, brought with him from Spain the royal instructions to carry into effect the above decree. Hence the work began in 1590 and continued under many governors till 1872. As this construction was carried on during different periods, often far apart, the building was not executed, therefore, according to any uniform plan.

Gov. Juan de Silva executed certain work on the fortifications in 1609 which was improved by Juan Niño de Tabora in 1626, and again improved by Diego Fajardo Chacón in 1644, the erection of the San Diego Bastion (Baluarte de San Diego) being completed in that year. This bastion shaped like an "ace of spades" is the southernmost point of the wall and appears to have been the first of the large bastions added to the encircling walls, then of no great height nor of finished construction. It was the former site of Nuestra Señora de Guia, the very first stone fort of Manila.

In 1951, Intramuros was declared as a historical monument and Fort Santiago, a national shrine with Republic Act 597, with the policy of restoring, reconstructing, and urban planning of Intramuros. Several laws and decrees also followed but results were deemed unsatisfactory due to limited funds.

In 1979, the Intramuros Administration was created by virtue of Presidential Decree no. 1616, signed by then President Ferdinand Marcos on April 10 of that year. Since then, the Intramuros Administration (IA) has been slowly restoring the walls, the sub-features of the fortification, and the city within. The remaining five original gates have been restored or rebuilt: Isabel II Gate, Parian Gate, Real Gate, Sta. Lucia Gate and the Postigo Gate. The four entrances made by the Americans by breaching the walls at four locations are now spanned by walkways thereby creating a connection, seamless in design and character to the original walls.

In 2003, during the Visit Philippines Year, Tourism Secretary Richard J. Gordon cleaned up Intramuros with the help of student and civilian volunteers as well as raised funds to improve the lighting of the place and build a lights-and-sound museum.
